A Heartfelt Note from Ms. Tina

26.10.2025 A Note from Ms. Tina

Le français suit l’anglais…

As a treasured part of our OrKidstra family, I am reaching out to you personally today to share some important news.

The journey of creating and building OrKidstra together with so many extraordinary people—including our incredible Co-Founders Margaret Maria and Gary McMillen—has been nothing short of living the dream. Today, with an abundance of love and courage, I share, that as “my baby” turned 18 last week it is time for me to start the process of letting go. I have decided to embark on a new chapter which means stepping aside from full-time leadership as the Artistic Managing Director of OrKidstra.

So, why am I leaving this cherished role? Many reasons have led to this challenging and emotional decision. From my own personal perspective, timing, energy, and flow are key, and, of course, as a flute player, I want to leave my full-time involvement on a high note! From OrKidstra’s perspective, the organization is in a strong place and ready to welcome new energy for our next phase of growth and sustainability. Although my role is shifting, like a proud parent, I will be present “in the wings,” staying connected to OrKidstra in my Emeritus role as a mentor and community advocate, and I will continue to be involved with the kids in a meaningful capacity as a teacher and coach. Change can be both exciting and scary, but I’m thankful that the strength and love of our community has given us the courage to move forward with this next chapter. My future will be rooted in my love and belief in OrKidstra, my curiosity to learn, and my desire to build as I dig deeper into social development.

I couldn’t be prouder of what OrKidstra continues to achieve. It has been a profound privilege and honour on so many levels to be the “leader of the band” since 2007. Every day, I see how the power of music gives our students a voice and a confidence that transcends differences and builds a community of belonging. Over the years, I have witnessed our young students flourish and become virtuoso human beings. I have seen Ottawa come together to support OrKidstra in what can only be described as a world-class example of community building. I have had the honour of working with the most incredible team. Everyone cares deeply and works extremely hard. And I am deeply grateful to my incredible Co-Leader, Carrie Lauzon and the Board of Directors for their endless support and understanding.

What I know for sure is that OrKidstra is in phenomenal hands. As you can imagine, the organization has been carefully preparing “backstage” for this “modulation” for some time, developing a succession process grounded in OrKidstra’s core values of Love, Courage, Excellence, and Belonging. As part of this journey, just over a year ago, OrKidstra shifted to a collaborative co-leadership model, with the Artistic Managing Director leading side-by-side with the Executive Managing Director. This shift aligned perfectly with the succession planning goals as outlined in OrKidstra’s Strategic Plan, and I feel confident that our leadership is ready to guide OrKidstra through this change into a new season of growth.

Early this week, the job posting for this role will open, and we invite you to share it widely, to help us find our next Co-Leader who will carry forward the spirit and vision of OrKidstra. I will continue to serve in my current role over the course of our 19th season until the process is complete (most likely until the spring), and I will welcome and support the new Artistic Managing Director as I step sideways into my new role as Co-Founder Emerita.

Words cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel for our beautiful OrKidstra family: the kids (current and alumni [OldKidstra]), their families, the staff, teaching artists, board, volunteers, and the vital support from our wonderful community, including our donors, sponsors, and supporters. My heartfelt thanks and love go out to each and every one of you for bringing us to this significant point in our story. It has truly taken a village—or, in our case, the best capital city in the world—to raise and build OrKidstra. So many thanks go to you, our generous and beautiful OrKidstra community, for continuing to “play your part.”

I love, love, love OrKidstra, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for playing every note with love, with me, together ♥

Ms. Tina

Mme Tina
